It really just occurred to me that I believe. That I believe in myself and my expertise, my talent and my vision to make a go of being exactly who I want to be and do exactly what I was meant to do. A strong statement, I know. It was actually a pretty hard slog, and quite simple at the same time. I want to write about the transition, the hurdles and the challenges. The past and the future. So, this blog journey will be about how I decided to finally switch gears in midlife. Just like that. (But not really just like that.)
“I am an architect.” That’s what I always tell people when they ask what I do. I follow that with: “My deep self is an architect. But I manage construction projects for a living. It makes me a better architect.” That has been my standard line for almost two decades now. While all this is true, it’s not exactly who I am. (We put entirely too much emphasis on what we do to make money today, and it is exhausting all of us.)
In truth, I am many things: a loyal friend, an extroverted introvert, a life-long learner, a lover of minimal art and all things beautiful. I am emotional and sensitive. I am strong and stubborn. I am single and childless by choice. I am anxious and thoughtful, curious, intelligent and an empath. Those are some of my latent super powers. I am hyper aware of my surroundings at all times; my true singular super power. All of those things have contributed to my successes and to my failures.
And they also…..make me a better architect.
And that is what I have decided to do; become the architect I always knew I was at heart. To follow my calling, my vocation or dharma, if you will. And by doing so, I hope to grow deeper into the person I have always longed to be: a maker of space and a servant to a greater idea and to society, while continuing to honor all those qualities I’ve honed for a half a century. I hope you enjoy the show!
Oh, the Obligatory Deets: I live in the middle Midwest (for now) after living in five other states. I bought a 150 year old church off the internets and made it into a house and studio in my thirties. I love Lake Michigan and the outside in general. I paint and sculpt and have a vintage homewares business too. I’ve been to 49 of the 50 states in a car. By myself. (Alaska, I’m coming for you!)
